Who is eligible to participate?
Visit the eligibility page for requirement information.

Can my child participate on a part-time basis?
No. Students must enroll in MDO as full-time students. Secondary students (grades 6-12) may be eligible to participate in part-time online programs through either Miami-Dade Virtual School or Florida Virtual School.

Can home education students enroll in the program?
No. State Statutes does not permit home education students to enroll in the program.

How can I enroll my child in the program?
Applications for the 2010-2011 school year are available on the School Choice & Parental Options website October 1, 2009 - January 15, 2010.

Does my child need to attend a regular school?
Students enrolled in MDO will be able to do most of their coursework from home. There will be specified times, such as FCAT testing, when students must report to a physical location. MDO reserves the right to require certain coursework and/or assessments to be completed in person at a district location.

Which content provider will be used in the program?
Florida Virtual School Connections Academy and Kaplan Virtual Education have been selected as the providers for grades K-5 and 6-12, respectively.  Students who attended either Florida Virtual School Connections Academy or Florida Virtual Academy during the 2008-2009 school year will be permitted to continue with their K-8 program with their current provider.

Who are the teachers?
All MDO teachers are Florida certified teachers.

How do I contact my child's teacher?
All teachers will provide an email address and phone number. If you are still unable to reach your child's teacher, contact the MDO office.

How much time should I spend to help my child?
Although your child will have a teacher, the program will require that a parent or other adult supervise and guide the student through the coursework.  It is anticipated that the parent/adult will need to commit approximately 4-6 hours per day to work with their child. The parent commitment time for high school students may be less. Please note that the parent commitment time may not the same as the amount of time that a student spends on completing coursework.

Will my child have to take the FCAT?
Students must take all state and district mandated testing. Failure to take any required assessment may result in removal from MDO. Students in Grades 3-11 must take the appropriate FCAT subtests as determined by the State. Juniors and seniors will be provided opportunities to retake the FCAT to earn passing scores. Students in Grades 1-2 will be required to take the SAT-10. There may be additional required tests. Students will be required to report to a pre-determined site for testing. These will be announced during the school year. Parents are responsible for transportation to all test sites.

Can students earn a diploma through MDO?
Yes. Students completing all graduation requirements will be able to earn a diploma.
